1922_Spillman_menagerie-gypsy-queen-organ-smScottsdale, AZ – The 2014 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Auction will feature a historic 1922 American antique carousel, and an 1865 French band organ, among its nearly 2,000 classic and antique cars. The 2014 Scottsdale auction-event will take place January 12-19, 2014

Throughout most of the 1970s, ’80s and 1990s, the words “auction” and “carousel” together typically meant bad news for the carousel (as a whole). But the days of an auction meaning that a complete carousel was no longer complete – and heading in 50 or so different directions – are gladly long over. The last time a carousel was broken up at auction was in 2000, when the 1990s Whalom Park Looff was sold off. In fact, as of late, auctions – and more specifically large collector auctions – have been very kind to carousels as a whole.

It may be that a new trend is beginning, (or an old one maturing), as full carousels have actually become the stars recently at some major auctions, featuring major collections full of other big ticket items – most notably – classic and antique cars. On the heels of these recent successes, the world famous Barrett-Jackson will feature a historic 1922 Spillman menagerie carousel, along with the 1865 Gasparini “Gypsy Queen” band organ in their January 2014 Scottsdale Collector Car Auction.

barrett-jackson-2014-collector-car-auctionInto its 40th year, the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Auction has grown to eight days, with six days of auction and close to 2,000 vehicles, as well as nightlife, fashion shows and more. For the past five years, Barrett-Jackson drew over 200,000 spectators to WestWorld, where the event has been held since 1989. The Speed Channel, (now FOX Sports 1), has been providing TV coverage of the Barrett-Jackson auction since 1993, and at the 2013 Scottsdale auction last year, 40 hours of bidding was aired live on TV. That air time should be matched, or even surpassed this year. See TV times and channel listings here.
Whether you can make it to Scottsdale in January or not, you won’t want to miss this historic event, and you don’t have to. The 1922 Spillman carousel and the “Gypsy Queen” organ are slated to be auctioned live on air, in prime-time, toward the end of the Saturday session, which will be televised live on the “National Geographic Channel”. Saturday’s auction television coverage runs on The NATGEO Channel from 1 pm until 8 pm EST.

The 2014 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Auction-event takes place January 12-19, 2014 in Scottsdale, AZ. The 2014 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Auction catalog and schedule is now online. Visit them at www.barrett-jackson.com for the full catalog, schedule, bidding, and all other auction information. They have a great website, easy to maneuver and browse, and even if you are not shopping for a classic car at the moment, it’s a lot of fun to window shop, as the cars, trucks and motorcycles (now nearing 2,000) range from the earliest Model T to modern Stock cars and Drag racers, and every automobile imaginable in between.

Dan will be there with the carousel all week. I hope to be there for the weekend at least. So if you can make it to Scottsdale, stop by and visit. If not, be sure to tune in to the NATGEO Channel Saturday afternoon to be sure not to miss this historic event. This will be a lot of fun, and great national exposure for historic carousels and band organs alike.
