The ca. 1881 commercial building of Hannibal Choate (1835–1923), prominent and influential early merchant of southeast Minnesota. Hannibal Choate was a pioneer in retail and was referred to as The Merchant Prince of South Eastern Minnesota. He founded a department store in historic downtown Winona at what is now 51-57 East Third Street with the help of Architecht A.E. Myhre. Choate became known as one of the finest dept stores in the country in the 1880’s.
